Nurturing Nature: A Tale of Biodiversity Conservation

In the heart of Sanail village of Singair upazila under Manikganj district, a vibrant gathering unfolded on May 22, 2024, celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity. With the theme “Be Part of the Plan,” the Agro-Biodiversity Fair, arranged with a collaboration between the Local Agro Biodiversity Conservation Committee, Green Coalition and BARCIK, aimed to ignite a collective consciousness for safeguarding biodiversity.

150 individuals, spanning generations and various occupational groups from 10 villages, convened to witness the rich tapestry of local flora and fauna. Farmers proudly displayed an array of native crop seeds, uncultivated food plants and fresh produce, illustrating the intricate dance between ecosystems.

Children, the torchbearers of tomorrow, lent their creativity to the cause through a painting competition, capturing the essence of beneficial insects, food chains, and diverse habitats. This artistic expression was complemented by insightful discussions on the interconnectedness of all life forms.

Local small holder farmers, urged by a sense of stewardship, vowed to be defender of biodiversity conservation. Forming a human chain, they pledged to avoid herbicides and protect invaluable uncultivated food plants as they have nutrition and medicinal value. Dr. Kamal Kanti Biswas, a beacon of community leadership, underscored the wisdom of nature’s balance, recounting a firsthand tale of symbiosis between birds and crops.

In this collective endeavor, 38 women, 32 men, 45 children, and 42 youths stood as guardians of biodiversity, showcasing 17 types of native seeds, 26 uncultivated food crops, 9 safe vegetables, and 11 local fruits.

Through such grassroots initiatives, we weave a narrative of harmony with nature, ensuring our well-being and nurturing a legacy for future generations.
