Breaking Barriers: The Inspiring Journey of Minoty Roy

By Asadul Islam, from Assashuni Satkhira

In Shotkona village in Asashuni Sadar Union, Minoty Roy stands as a beacon of resilience and success. Unlike many, she has carved a unique path as a successful woman entrepreneur, challenging societal norms and thriving in a male-dominated marketplace.

Minoty’s journey to entrepreneurship was troubled with hardship. Abandoned by her husband shortly after marriage and left to raise a child alone, she faced a series of daunting challenges. Following the death of her father, the full burden of supporting her family fell on her shoulders. Initially, Minoty worked as a day laborer, juggling multiple responsibilities while pursuing her education. Her time at an NGO provided some respite, but the temporary nature of the work forced her to seek a more sustainable solution.

Determined to break free from the cycle of uncertainty, Minoty turned to entrepreneurship. Despite her physical ailments and the patriarchal scrutiny of her community, she began a modest vegetable business, selling produce on the roadside. Financial constraints and the absence of a supportive husband or father made expansion difficult, but Minoty’s perseverance never diminished.

Support arrived in the form of BARCIK’s PORIBESH project financed by NETZ-Bangladesh, which provided essential resources and training. With their assistance, Minoty diversified her offerings to include vegetables and spices, eventually establishing a permanent shop in the Asashuni wet market. Here, she stood as the sole female trader, defying all stereotypes and proving her bravery.

Today, Minoty’s business is thriving. She seamlessly operates her market stall alongside male traders, earning their respect and encouragement. Her success not only supports her family but also ensures her children receive a proper education. Reflecting on her journey, Minoty proudly declares her accomplishments and expresses gratitude for the support that enabled her to transform her life.

Minoty Roy’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the impact of supportive initiatives. Her rise from adversity to prosperity serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with courage and resilience, breaking barriers is possible.
