‘We have only one Earth, so let’s not destroy it through excessive consumption. The rich nations, through carbon pollution, are damaging the atmosphere, leading to the depletion of the ozone layer, which acts as the Earth’s sunscreen. In response, environmental organizations and students from Netrakona district held demonstration, carrying colorful banners, placards, and posters, calling on rich countries to take action to protect the ozone layer.
Recently, with the support of BARCIK, the “Sabuj Sanghoti” (Green Solidarity) Nabadhaara Volunteer Organization, and the combined youth community jointly observed Ozone Layer Protection Day-2024 in Madan Upazila, of Netrakona along with a ‘Nature bond’ event. The event was presided over by Imam Hossain Mehdi, President of Sabuj Sanghoti. Journalists, teachers, students, men and women from the Haor region, Priyam from the youth community, and BARCIK’s regional coordinator of Netrakona Md. Ohidur Rahman, along with Program Officer Md. Alamgir, were also present at the event.
The discussants of the event said that excessive consumption by rich countries is leading to the destruction of the ozone layer. In order to save the Earth, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced. They said, “If we care for nature, nature will take care of us.’ At the conclusion of the event, a memorandum was submitted to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), demanding the excavation of rivers in Madan Upazila including other demands to protect the haor region. The organizers also called for the recovery and dredging of canals connected to the rivers to restore the water flow between the Haor and the rivers.
